Sunset on the Tagus and fado — how to fit both into one evening
A sunset sail and a fado night fit into the same day, but the boat's departure time moves with the seasons. When it works, when it doesn't, and which fado to pick afterwards.
Short answer
Yes, but it depends on the season. The sailing boat leaves Belém at sunset time: around 4 pm in winter, 7:30 pm at the height of summer, and it lasts two hours. In winter, you are off the boat at 6 pm and can still catch a 7 pm fado. At the height of summer, you only get off at 9:30 pm — the fado has to be late, in a fado house, or saved for another night. If you want the river and fado on the same night without the arithmetic, there is a boat with fado on board.
Watching Lisbon change colour from the river and ending the night with fado is one of the loveliest plans you can make on a short trip. The catch is that the sun doesn't wait for the fado schedule, and the fado doesn't wait for the sun either.
The sailing boat
Two hours on the Tagus on a skippered sailing boat, with Portuguese wine included. The group is twelve people at most. The boat leaves from Doca de Belém, near the Monument to the Discoveries, and passes Belém Tower, goes under the 25 de Abril bridge and runs along the Baixa waterfront to the view of Alfama.
Two things to know before you go. Check-in is 30 minutes before departure, at a van with an orange and blue flag in the marina. And the boat sails in any weather: bring a jacket, even in summer, because it gets cool quickly on the river.

It costs from €55 per person. Food is not included — you will have dinner afterwards, and that is where the fado comes in.
What time the boat leaves
The departure time follows the sunset, so it changes through the year. Going by the operator's published schedule:
- Late October to January: leaves at 4 pm, back at 6 pm.
- February and March: between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm.
- April to September: between 6 pm and 7:30 pm. From mid-May to the end of July, it leaves at 7:30 pm and returns at 9:30 pm.
- October: around 5:30 pm.

Which fado to pick afterwards
From Belém to Chiado or Alfama is about 20 minutes by taxi or Uber. Allow for it.
From late October to January, you are off the boat at 6 pm and have time for everything. Fado in Chiado has a 7 pm show, Monday to Saturday: 50 minutes, no dinner, and you eat in Chiado afterwards. If you would rather have dinner with your fado, fado with petiscos has departures up to 8 pm, in Príncipe Real.
In February, March and October, the boat returns between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm. The 7 pm Fado in Chiado gets tight; the petiscos tour, with its 8 pm departure, fits well. The alternative is a fado house where you have dinner and hear fado until late — the Alfama guide explains how they work.
From April to September, you get off the boat between 8 pm and 9:30 pm. By then, every show I recommend has already started. Either you go to a fado house late, for a drink and the end of the night, or you sail one evening and do the fado on another. With three or four days in Lisbon, that is what I would do.
What if it's all on the same boat?
Fado on a boat on the Tagus brings the two together: three hours on the river, with dinner on board and live fado. At the moment it sails on Thursdays, around 7 pm. Between November and February it already leaves after dark: you go for the city lights, not for the sunset.
It is less intimate than a small room in Alfama, and the sailing boat is prettier for the sunset. But it sorts out the evening with a single booking.
No boat, no cost
If all you want is to watch the sun go down over the river, the Miradouro de Santa Catarina, ten minutes' walk from Chiado, looks straight out at the bridge and the Tagus. Watch the sunset, then walk to the fado.

In a single day from Lisbon, the Douro is too far. The plan that works: train to Porto, a winery tour from there, and the fado saved for Lisbon.
