Bela started as a wine and petiscos bar on Rua dos Remédios, in the heart of Alfama, and became a meeting place for artists and night owls. Today it is a fado house and nothing else. The room is small, with red walls and tiles, Portuguese guitars hanging on the wall and old crockery on the shelves. It feels like someone's dining room, and the service matches: informal, family-run.
What sets it apart is the rhythm. There is no show that starts and ends: fado comes in between the courses, several times over dinner, and the night runs until midnight or one. You eat, the room goes quiet, someone sings, you go back to the table.
Who it's for
For anyone who wants the full fado night in a neighbourhood house, with no stage and no production. For people who like to eat slowly and stay late. For a first time that doesn't feel like one.
It's not for anyone with only an hour — for that there's Fado in Alfama, also in the neighbourhood. Nor for anyone who wants to pay it all by card: the deposit is paid online, but the rest of the bill is cash, at the end of the night.
What to expect
Arrive before 9 pm, which is when the room goes quiet and the fado begins — around 9 or 9:30 pm. By then the petiscos are already on the table. Several fadistas sing over the course of dinner, in short sets between the courses; the house has a rotating cast, and voices who have sung there include Teresinha Landeiro, Carolina Varela Ribeiro, Sara Paixão and Sérgio Onze.
The rule of silence applies as in any serious house: when someone sings, you put your fork down. Between fados, talk freely.
What you eat and drink
It is a fixed tasting menu; there is no à la carte. First, a run of cold and hot starters: bread, olives, tuna pâté, Nisa cheese, roasted pepper salad, broad beans with green sauce, mushrooms with asparagus, chickpea salad and peixinhos da horta (green beans fried in batter). Then vegetable soup and the hot dishes of the day, fish and meat. To finish, traditional desserts of your choice, and coffee or tea.
Drinks are included throughout dinner, with no limit: white, red, vinho verde and rosé wine, sangria, beer, soft drinks and water. The dishes of the day change — what stays is Portuguese home cooking.
At Bela, the rest of the bill is cash only. Bring the amount with you. If you have a dietary restriction, write it in when you pay the deposit (there's a field for it) or tell me, and I'll check with the house.
How to book
Bela is the only house I book myself. Just below you can see the house's own free tables: pick the day, the time and the number of people, and pay a €10 deposit per person. I book the table and confirm it by WhatsApp or email. At the house you pay the rest, €50 per person, in cash: the deposit comes off the bill, so the price is the house's own. The booking commission is paid to me by Bela, not by you.
If you'd rather, message me on WhatsApp, by email or in the site chat with the date and the number of people. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before.
The room is small and tends to fill up. Book a few days ahead.

Frequently asked questions
- How does booking work?
- Pick the day, time and party size here, from the house's own free tables, and pay a €10 deposit per person through Stripe. I book the table and confirm it with you by WhatsApp or email. You pay the rest at the house, at the end of the night, in cash.
- Do I need to speak Portuguese?
- No. Fado is sung in Portuguese, but these experiences welcome visitors from all over the world. Fado is understood without a literal translation — it is more emotion than lyrics.
- What is the rule of silence?
- While someone sings, the room stays silent: no conversation, no flash photos. Between fados you can talk and toast. It is what makes fado work.
- Does booking through you cost more?
- No. The €10 deposit per person is part of the house's price and comes off the bill: at the house you only pay the rest. The house pays me a commission for the booking, not you.
- What if I need to cancel?
- Message me at least 48 hours before (WhatsApp or fabio@fado.today) and I refund the whole deposit. After that, or if you don't turn up, the deposit isn't refunded. If the house has no table for your request, you always get it back.
Not looking for a venue? For fado at private events — weddings, corporate dinners, launches — I recommend Onofriana.
