Fado in Alfama — a show in the neighbourhood, with port wine

An hour of fado in a small room, in the heart of Alfama. No dinner, with a glass of port. The most direct way to hear fado where it was born.

If there's one place where it makes sense to hear fado for the first time, it's Alfama. It was here — in the narrow streets, the courtyards, the taverns — that fado grew up. This show is the most direct way to hear it in the neighbourhood itself: a small room, an hour of music, and a glass of port in your hand.

There's no dinner, no ceremony. There's a voice, a Portuguese guitar, a viola, and a room small enough to feel the fado two metres from you. It's the most intimate experience of the ones I recommend — and, of the six, the one with the highest rating from people who went.

Who it's for

For those who want to hear fado in Alfama without committing the whole night. For those who have already had dinner and want just the music. For those on a tighter budget who still want serious fado, in the right neighbourhood. It's also the best choice for a first time: short, intense, no logistics.

It's not for those after dinner included — for that, see Fado with tour and dinner or the Alfama Experience.

What to expect from the night

You arrive, sit down, order your port — it's included in the ticket. The room fills up gradually. When the first fadista begins, the room falls silent: the rule of silence applies here as in any serious fado.

It's about 60 minutes, with fadistas alternating — male and female voices, always accompanied by the Portuguese guitar and the viola. The repertoire runs through the classics. At the end, you step out into a cobbled street, Alfama around you and the Tagus down below. That exit is part of the experience.

Booking

Book online with instant confirmation. The room is small — in high season (May to October) book a few days ahead; Fridays and Saturdays sell out first.

Frequently asked questions

How does booking work?
Booking is online, via Viator, with instant confirmation. You get the voucher by email — nothing to print.
Do I need to speak Portuguese?
No. Fado is sung in Portuguese, but these experiences welcome visitors from all over the world. Fado is understood without a literal translation — it is more emotion than lyrics.
What is the rule of silence?
While someone sings, the room stays silent: no conversation, no flash photos. Between fados you can talk and toast. It is what makes fado work.
Does the FADOTODAY code change the price?
No. Mentioning FADOTODAY when you book helps me keep this site running — the price you pay is exactly the same.
