How to get to Alfama — transport for your fado night
Alfama is a maze of narrow streets where cars don't go well. How to get there for a fado night: metro, tram, taxi, and on foot.

Short answer
To get to Alfama at night, the most practical option is a taxi or ride-hail (Uber/Bolt) to the Sé or Largo das Portas do Sol — then it's five to ten minutes on foot. The metro (blue line, Terreiro do Paço) and tram 28 also work, but the 28 is usually packed at night. Don't try to park: Alfama wasn't built for cars.
Alfama is Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood and it looks it: narrow cobbled streets, dead ends, stairways. It's beautiful by day and by night — but it's a nightmare to drive. Here's how to get there stress-free for your fado night.
Taxi or ride-hail — the most practical
For a fado night, I recommend a taxi or ride-hail (Uber, Bolt). They won't drop you at the door of the fado house — the streets are too narrow — but they'll drop you nearby. Ask to be dropped at one of these points:
- The Sé (the cathedral) — a central point, a good landmark, easy for any driver.
- Largo das Portas do Sol — further up, with a viewpoint; good if the house is in the upper part of Alfama.
From either one, it's five to ten minutes on foot to most houses. Be prepared to go up and down.
Metro
The Lisbon metro (blue line) has a station at Terreiro do Paço, on the waterfront by the river. From there, you walk up into Alfama — a ten- to fifteen-minute climb. It works well if you don't mind walking and want to save money.
Tram 28
The famous tram 28 crosses Alfama and is an experience in itself. But there's a catch: at night, and in high season, it's usually crammed. If you want to ride it for the experience, do that during the day, before the fado night — at night, with a booked time, don't risk depending on it.
On foot
If you're staying in the Baixa or near the Castle, Alfama may be ten or fifteen minutes away on foot. It's the best way to arrive — you feel the neighbourhood changing around you. Wear comfortable footwear: the cobblestones are uneven and there are slopes.
Why not to park
Don't try to go by car. Alfama's streets are extremely narrow, many residents-only, and there's no parking. The stress of driving around looking for a spot ruins the start of the night. Leave the car at the hotel and use one of the methods above.
And for the other experiences
Not all the fado experiences I recommend are in Alfama. Fado no Chiado is in the centre, easy by metro (Baixa-Chiado). Fado on a boat on the Tagus boards at Terreiro do Paço. But Fado in Alfama is in the neighbourhood — and for that one, this guide is what you need. Fado with tour and dinner meets at Rossio station and walks you into Alfama.

- What's the best way to get to Alfama at night?
A taxi or ride-hail (Uber/Bolt) to the Sé or Largo das Portas do Sol, then five to ten minutes on foot. It's the most practical for a fado night.
- Does the metro go to Alfama?
Not directly. The nearest station is Terreiro do Paço (blue line), by the river. From there, you walk up into Alfama — a ten- to fifteen-minute climb.
- Can I drive to Alfama?
It's not advisable. The streets are extremely narrow, many residents-only, and there's no parking. Go by taxi, ride-hail or on foot.
- Is tram 28 a good option for fado?
For the experience, yes — but during the day. At night and in high season it's usually packed. If you have a booked fado time, don't depend on it.

You can do Sintra and a fado night in Lisbon on the same day, but only with a plan. Train or tour, what to check before booking, and which fado to pick after nine hours of palaces.

The Douro from Lisbon — is it worth it in a day?
In a single day from Lisbon, the Douro is too far. The plan that works: train to Porto, a winery tour from there, and the fado saved for Lisbon.
