Café Luso — fado in the cellars of a Bairro Alto palace
Since 1941 in the former stables of the Palácio de São Roque, with no microphones and no stage. A €65 menu without drinks, every day, fado from 20:15. A large room, for about 185 people.
Short answer
Café Luso is a fado house with dinner in Bairro Alto, in the vaulted cellars of a former palace. There's a €65 menu per person (starter, main, dessert, fado), without drinks — one of the cheapest menus among the houses with a professional cast. It opens every day, and the fado starts at 20:15. It's a large room that takes a lot of groups.
Café Luso opened in 1927 on Avenida da Liberdade and moved to Bairro Alto in January 1941, into the former stables of the Palácio Brito Freire, also called the Palácio de São Roque. Lucília do Carmo, Berta Cardoso and Alfredo Marceneiro sang there while it was still on the Avenida; in 1955, Amália recorded the album "No Café Luso" here. The house calls itself the "Cathedral of Fado" and claims to be the oldest fado house in the country.
Today it belongs to the same group as Clube de Fado and Adega Machado.

What the night is like
There are no microphones and no stage: the fadistas sing among the tables and the stone does the acoustics. When someone stands up to sing, the kitchen stops and the room goes quiet — it's the house rule. Sets of fado alternate with the courses until one. The cast the house lists for 2026 includes Elsa Laboreiro, Ana Marta, Yola Dinis and Cristiano de Sousa.
The room holds about 185 people, so it isn't intimate: there are long tables, groups and tour parties. If you're looking for a small room, you should know this beforehand.
How much it costs
€65 per person for the menu with couvert, starter, main and dessert, with the fado included. Drinks are paid separately. There's no ticket for the fado alone.
Who it's for — and who it isn't
It's for those who want to dine in a historic room, with fado sung without a microphone, and for groups that need space for a lot of people.
It isn't for those looking for intimacy — for that there are smaller rooms, like Fado in Alfama or, without dinner, Fado no Chiado, a few minutes' walk away.
How to book
On the house's website, for groups of up to ten. Larger groups and events, by contacting the house directly.
