How long does a fado night last — durations by format
A fado night can last one hour or four. How long each format runs, when it starts, and how to fit fado into the rest of your night.
Short answer
A fado night lasts between one and four hours, depending on the format. A short show without dinner: about an hour. A cruise: three hours. A food tour with fado: three and a half hours. A night with dinner and tour: four hours. Fado usually starts around 9pm; short shows may have earlier sessions.
"How long does it take?" is a practical and important question — you need to know to plan the rest of your night. Here are the real durations, format by format.
Short show, no dinner — about 1 hour
The quickest format. Fado no Chiado lasts almost exactly 50 minutes. Fado in Alfama is around 60 minutes. You arrive 15–20 minutes early, listen, and carry on with your night. It's the best choice if you want to fit fado between other things.
Cruise with fado — about 3 hours
Fado on a boat on the Tagus lasts about three hours, including boarding, dinner and fado. The boat leaves and returns to the same pier — there's no flexibility to leave early, it's a closed night.
Night with dinner and tour — about 4 hours
Fado with tour and dinner lasts about four hours: an hour of walking, then dinner and the show. It's a big block of your night — count on it.
Food tour with fado — about 3h30
Fado with petiscos lasts about three and a half hours: four stops on foot between Príncipe Real and Bairro Alto, and the last one is a fado house. It's the whole evening, on the move. For those who want to give the night to one thing.
What time fado starts
Fado in Lisbon starts late. In the experiences with dinner, the meal begins around 8pm and the singing comes in between 9pm and 9.30pm. Short shows have sessions that may start earlier, around 7pm, or at 9pm. If the experience includes dinner, arrive half an hour to an hour before.
