Fado tonight in Lisbon — where you can still go

Want to hear fado tonight and haven't booked anything yet? The houses with fado today, by day of the week, and what to do at the last minute: concerts with same-day tickets, taverns with no booking, free tables.

Short answer

There's fado in Lisbon tonight, whatever day it is — most houses open every day, and the ones that close do so on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. At the last minute, the safest bet is an hour-long concert with a same-day ticket, like Fado in Alfama or Fado no Chiado, or a fado vadio tavern where you can't book, like Tasca do Chico, if you get there early. The dinner houses fill up on Fridays and Saturdays: call ahead.

I get this question a lot in the late afternoon: "I'm in Lisbon, it's tonight, where do I go?" The good news is that there's fado every night. The less good news is that the most sought-after houses fill up days ahead, especially at weekends. Here's what's open today and how to sort it out at the last minute.

At the last minute: what usually has room

An hour-long concert. They sell same-day tickets, often until shortly before they start. Fado in Alfama, at Casa Lundum near the Sé, starts in the early evening; Fado no Chiado at 19:00 (and at 17:30 from April to October), except on Sundays. There's time to have dinner afterwards.

A fado vadio tavern. You don't book: you get there early. Tasca do Chico, in Bairro Alto, opens every night at 19:00 — go when it opens if you want a spot. On weekend afternoons there's fado vadio at Tasca do Jaime, in Graça.

A dinner house, after 22:30. Some houses let you in later just to drink and listen: Fado ao Carmo, in Chiado, with a €15 minimum, Adega Machado, in Bairro Alto, and O Faia at 23:30. Call to ask if there's room.

A table at Tasca da Bela. Wednesday to Sunday, in Alfama. The site shows the next free table — further down this page — and you book online with a €10 deposit per person.

Day by day

  • Sunday: O Faia, Senhor Vinho and Fado no Chiado have no fado. On the other hand, in the afternoon there's fado vadio at Tasca do Jaime, in Graça, and at Clube Lisboa Amigos do Fado, in Marvila.
  • Monday: Parreirinha de Alfama, Povo, Maria da Mouraria and Tasca da Bela are closed, and so is the Museu do Fado. The Alfama Tasca do Chico and the Real Fado concerts don't come back until Thursday.
  • Tuesday: Tasca da Bela is still closed.
  • Wednesday: A Severa, in Bairro Alto, is closed.
  • Thursday: the only fado night at A Nini, near Marquês de Pombal — a €30 dinner.
  • Friday and Saturday: almost everything open, and almost everything full. Book days ahead, or go to a short concert.

Before you head out

Days and hours change with the season, and some houses close for holidays. Call or check the house's website before you go. And if you're torn between formats, I compare them in how much fado costs in Lisbon.
