The best fado houses in Lisbon (2026) — by kind of night
Ten places to hear fado in Lisbon, chosen by the kind of night you're after: dinner at a classic house, fado vadio in a tavern, or an hour of fado without dinner. With 2026 prices and the days they close.
Short answer
There's no single best fado house in Lisbon — there's the best one for the night you want. For dinner at a classic house: O Faia, Senhor Vinho or Clube de Fado (€67.50 to €78 per person for the menu). For fado vadio: Tasca do Chico or A Baiuca (€10 to €25). For an hour of fado without dinner: Casa Lundum, in Alfama, or Fado in Chiado (€19 to €23). And for dinner at a neighbourhood house with everything included, Tasca da Bela, which I book myself (€60).
When people ask me which is the best fado house in Lisbon, I answer with another question: do you want dinner, or just to listen? Do you want a set time, or are you willing to take a chance on a tavern where whoever wants to sings? The answer changes everything — the price, the neighbourhood and the night you'll have.

Your fado night in Lisbon
Everything to choose and enjoy your fado night: map, houses, prices, videos and ready-made plans. Reads well on a phone.
For dinner at a classic house
These are the houses with a professional cast, a sit-down dinner and the fado between the courses. Budget €65 to €85 per person for the menu, with drinks almost always extra.
- O Faia (Bairro Alto) — the Carmo family's house, since 1947. Menus from €75 to €100. Closed on Sundays.
- Senhor Vinho (Lapa) — the house of the fadista Maria da Fé, since 1975, where Mariza, Camané and Ana Moura started out. €67.50. Closed on Sundays.
- Clube de Fado (Alfama) — stone arches next to the Sé, founded by a guitarist in 1995. €78, every day.
- Parreirinha de Alfama (Alfama) — Argentina Santos's house for almost seventy years. €68 with the show. Closed on Mondays.
- Café Luso (Bairro Alto) — the cellars of a palace, no microphones, since 1941. €65, every day. The room is large and takes a lot of groups.
For fado vadio
Fado vadio is the kind with no programme: whoever wants to, sings, between the tables. It's cheap and unpredictable — one night it's extraordinary, another it's uneven.
- Tasca do Chico (Bairro Alto) — the best-known fado vadio tavern in the city. No entry fee, around €10 in drinks. Get there early.
- A Baiuca (Alfama) — a six-table tavern, with à la carte dinner (around €25). Phone bookings only.
For an hour of fado, without dinner
For those short on time or who already have somewhere to eat. Concerts of 50 minutes to an hour, with a ticket.
- Fado in Alfama — at Casa Lundum, near the Sé, with a glass of port. From €19.
- Fado no Chiado — a concert in the centre, at 19:00 (and at 17:30, April to October). €23. Closed on Sundays.
- O Faia, at 23:30 — if you've already eaten: 45 minutes of fado in a classic house for a €20 supplement plus whatever you order.
For dinner at a neighbourhood house
Tasca da Bela, on Rua dos Remédios, in Alfama: a petiscos menu with drinks included and fado between the courses until midnight, Wednesday to Sunday, for €60. It's the only house where I make the booking myself.
How to choose
- First time? An hour of fado without dinner, or a classic house midweek. I wrote about this in your first time at a fado house.
- Tight budget? Fado vadio, or O Faia's 23:30 session.
- Want to compare prices? I explain what each format costs in the price guide.
- Alfama or Bairro Alto? I explain the difference in Alfama vs. Bairro Alto.
- What's the best fado house in Lisbon?
It depends on the night you want. For dinner at a classic house, O Faia, Senhor Vinho or Clube de Fado. For fado vadio, Tasca do Chico or A Baiuca. For an hour of fado without dinner, Casa Lundum in Alfama or Fado in Chiado.
- How much does a fado house in Lisbon cost?
Dinner with fado at a classic house costs €65 to €85 per person for the menu, without drinks. Fado vadio costs whatever you drink, from €0 to €25. An hour-long concert costs €19 to €23.
- Do I need to book a fado house?
At the houses with dinner, yes — especially on Fridays and Saturdays. At the fado vadio taverns, you often can't book: you get there early.
Before or after the fado
The rest of your day: Sintra, the Douro, the river at sunset or an afternoon in Lisbon — and how each one fits around a fado night.

Sintra by day, fado by night — how to fit both into one day
You can do Sintra and a fado night in Lisbon on the same day, but only with a plan. Train or tour, what to check before booking, and which fado to pick after nine hours of palaces.

The Douro from Lisbon — is it worth it in a day?
In a single day from Lisbon, the Douro is too far. The plan that works: train to Porto, a winery tour from there, and the fado saved for Lisbon.

A sunset sail and a fado night fit into the same day, but the boat's departure time moves with the seasons. When it works, when it doesn't, and which fado to pick afterwards.
